| Symptom | A negative balance or cost basis 0 |

| Common | Import starts only in the tax year |
| FIFO | Needs the purchases from prior years |
Import only from 2024 although you bought in 2017. The API only returns a limited window. An old exchange was deleted. A wallet name in CoinTracking does not match the real address. A chain was never connected.
Compare the first outflow with the first inflow of the same asset. If the outflow is earlier, something is missing before it. In chain.report CleanUp makes that visible per wallet instead of as a global warning in the PDF.
Email exports, tax CSVs, the blockchain of the withdrawal address, dated screenshots. Imperfect evidence is better than cost basis zero. CleanUp tells you which asset and period is missing so you can search with a target.
No. FIFO and the holding period need prior-year purchases. A single-year CSV creates warnings by design.
Wrong address, only one chain of many, or a contract the importer does not split. Then the movement sits in a smart contract, not in the native history.
Only if the coins are really gone. An exchange you forgot to import is not a loss. Falsely declared losses show up in a review.
This guide structures the data issues and common German administrative practice. It is not tax advice. The assessment in your case stays with you and your tax advisor.
Import the same inventory into chain.report. CleanUp shows wallet, asset and period — not just “missing transactions”.
